Shravan 2025 Kanwar Yatra in Kaliyuga – Krishna Guruji’s Insights
By Krishna Guruji | Part of the Kaliyug Puran Series
Each year, devotees eagerly celebrate the Kanwar Yatra during Shravan. Kanwar Yatra. It stands among India’s biggest pilgrimages. Moreover, millions of pilgrims, known as Kanwariyas, carry sacred Ganga water to offer it to Lord Shiva. This journey symbolizes profound faith and spiritual discipline.
Ancient Roots of Kanwar Yatra Kavad Yatra
The Kanwar Yatra traces back to legendary tales from the Treta Yuga. For instance:
- Shravan Kumar became the first Kanwariya. He carried his blind parents on his shoulders to holy sites. Tragically, King Dasharath’s arrow caused his death. Eventually, his Kanwar returned home, carrying only Ganga water.
- Parashurama fetched Ganga water from Garhmukteshwar and offered it at Pura Mahadev’s Shiva Linga.
- Lord Shri Ram brought Ganga water from SultanGanj to Deoghar’s Baba Baidyanath Dham, where he performed abhishek rituals for Lord Shiva.
These stories remind us that the Kanwar Yatra has never been just a journey. Instead, it represents deep spiritual practice and personal sacrifice.
Kanwar Yatra in Kaliyuga: Transformation and Challenges
Today, in Kaliyuga, technology allows pilgrims to complete long journeys within days. However, modern times have also changed the Yatra’s nature.
- In some places, the Yatra has become more of a public display rather than a spiritual act. Loud DJ music, roadblocks, and massive processions often overshadow its sacred purpose.
- Although many pilgrims still walk with genuine devotion, some treat the journey as a festival for entertainment. Meanwhile, commercial interests sometimes take priority over spiritual service at pilgrimage centers.
- Furthermore, political motives have crept into religious events. As a result, the Kanwar Yatra sometimes becomes a platform for power displays and vote-bank politics.
The True Essence of Kanwar Yatra Kavad Yatra
Krishna Guruji emphasizes that the Kanwar Yatra goes far beyond physical travel:
“The true meaning of Kanwar Yatra is to offer the water within ourselves to Lord Shiva. It’s not merely a physical journey but a spiritual pilgrimage where we surrender our ego, desires, and anger.”
The Yatra is never meant to be a loud parade. Rather, it’s a personal path to spiritual purification. Shiva seeks sincere devotion, not noisy crowds. Consequently, if we restore the original spirit of penance and faith, the Kanwar Yatra will remain relevant in Kaliyuga just as it did in Treta and Dwapar Yuga.

Final Thoughts
The Kanwar Yatra remains a powerful symbol of devotion, sacrifice, and spiritual growth. However, it’s crucial to protect its sacred essence from noise, showmanship, and political motives. As Krishna Guruji explains, true pilgrimage depends not on distance but on the depth of surrender and love for the divine.
Om Namah Shivaya.
